Congratulations to Marie Byrne on her elevation to Mayor of Limerick

TO LIMERICK HURLERS

In Mitcham Gaelic Stadium, on a brown October day
The Junior team from Limerick gave us such a grand display
Against the boys from London, they had the skill in store
To become All-Ireland champions for Nineteen Fifty-Four.

Cunneen, St. Patrick's stalwart, was a man of steel in goal
O'Sullivan from Kilmallock played a champion full-back role
And Keogh from Ballybricken soon the opposition beat
To see O' Neill and Dooley from South Liberties was a treat.

Sean Murphy, pride of Castletown, was a credit to the "Green"
While the Quaids from good old Feonagh, were as skilful as was seen.
Barry of Kildimo proved to be both fast and tough
As did Carmody of Knockainey and Raleigh from famed Bruff.

Cobbe, St. Patrick's other man, was always at his best
And against the London back-line Christy Daly stood  the test.
Callaghan from Killeedy had the best of each attack
And Willie Dooley showed us the skill he did not lack.

The sporting Mayor of Limerick was there to cheer them on
And we are proud to name him as Limerick's best loved son
May he come to London soon again and bring the champions o'er
Who won the Junior laurels for Nineteen Fifty-Four.

George T. Daly

OLD SCHOOL DAYS
-Risteard O'Phinginn

Children, o' children as you pass me by,
As you going now so once went I
Singing and skipping with my book and rule,
On an old winding road to an old country school.

All around the playground to sing and to play,
Soon our good teachers will be on their way
The summer is coming the wild flowers are blooming,
The sun will be shining throughout the long day.

Soon the old school will close, all around will be quiet,
One would think 'twas a graveyard in the dead hour of night,
The teachers are off on their holiday tour,
And we children will roam through meadows and moor.

With the old books stacked away and feeling so free
Like the hare or the pheasant or the birds on the tree
Over hills and through vales with no worry or care
And to hear the lark sing high up in the air.

Holidays, o holidays sure they never should end
But we children are happy whatever God sends
Sometimes poor Mammie would say now and then,
Oh how I wish the old school would open again.

With the long days soon over its plain to be seen,
Shortly we are back in the old classroom again
Goodbye to the swallows and to all the birds nests
Of all days of our lives the old schooldays are best.
